For more than three decades, David Dessler taught government as a professor at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. David Dessler was elected to become president of the faculty assembly in 2013 and received the college’s Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award in 1991.

The College of William and Mary awards the Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award to faculty members who are encouraged and influenced by Thomas Jefferson. These individuals have demonstrated a commitment to improving society and individuals through the stimulation and inspiration of learning. This commitment is demonstrated through their influence and character. The College of William and Mary gives the Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award to younger teaching members on staff in any department.

Recipients of the Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award are selected every year and are announced during Charter Day weekend, a celebration that marks the founding of William and Mary. During this event, the institution also presents students, alumni, faculty, and friends with prizes and awards, such as the Thomas Jefferson Award and Thomas Jefferson Prize in Natural Philosophy. The former is given to members of the William and Mary faculty in recognition of outstanding service, while the latter is given to undergraduate students.
